Other observations: Jeff Lockie has impressed throughout the month with his willingness to do whatever the team needs. Whether it's throwing to receivers during individual drills or filling in at wideout or running back when reps are needed. It can't be easy for a guy who is just one year removed from a starting quarterback battle and more prominent role, but it's obvious he has the respect of his teammates and coaches.

■ Andy McNamara announces Oregon's depth chart following the end of fall camp.

Graduate transfer Dakota Prukop held off a challenge from a trio of young quarterbacks to secure the top spot at that position. The former Montana State signal-caller and FCS first-team All-American demonstrated the consistency and poise expected from a player of his experience level and caliber throughout the three-week preseason training camp. Prukop will be backed up by Eugene native Justin Herbert, one of three true freshmen to appear on the initial depth chart.

Other highlights: A day after the offense jumped on the defense out of the gate, the defense returned the favor Wednesday, albeit not in an official competition day. The first period after stretching was pass rush, and the defensive linemen cleaned up with Jalen Jelks beating Cameron Hunt off the line, and T.J. Daniel turning the corner around Tyrell Crosby to get to the quarterback. … The next drill was 1-on-1 pass drills conducted near the goal line, and it was more of the same. Troy Dye and Ugo Amadi had interceptions...

JC tansfers A.J. Hotchkin and Jonah Moi, former Riverside City College LB's, look to make an impact for the Ducks this year.

Mark Helfrich and Brady Hoke talked with the media following practice.

■ Malik Lovette and Dylan Kane have made the switch to new positions.

■ Kevin Gemmell believes Charles Nelson could be a game changer.

For now, it looks as though Nelson is going to stay on the offensive side of the ball. But considering the work he did on defense last season, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him thrust back into service in the secondary. The junior posted 47 stops last season with a pair of interceptions. He still managed to haul in 17 balls for 270 yards and three scores. As a kick returner, he averaged 26.5 yards per return with a touchdown.

I believe 2016 will be his finest hour. The Ducks will silence the doubters and detractors by finishing with 11 wins and a conference championship. Even if they don’t, the building blocks of Oregon football are sound, and Helfrich is the right guy. I hope he coaches here 25 years.

The will to be better is vital, and these guys know what better looks like. Many of them practiced with Marcus Mariota, Bralon Addison and DeForest Buckner. The example of those PAC-12 Champions lives on. It’s good that 9-4 isn’t good enough anymore. No one ever rises to low expectations.

Royce Freeman comes in at #2 on the top 25 players in the Pac-12 for the preseason.

One of the best in the nation, Freeman tallied 1,836 rushing yards last season with a league-best 17 touchdowns. He averaged 141.2 yards per game. Only the guy ranked ahead of him on this list had more. Freeman is a tank running up the middle, but he has unexpected breakaway speed for a 6-foot, 229-pound back. In a season loaded with top-end running backs, Freeman should be considered among the elite.

Las Vegas sports books put the Webfoots at 40-1 to win the national title. With a nucleus of Freeman, Darren Carrington, Pharaoh Brown and Tyrell Crosby, this would be a great year to break through, provided that the defense develops the chops to compete on the biggest stage.
