Duck Stuff: Thursday Edition

Rob Moseley has your Wednesday spring practice report.

Practice highlights: The Ducks spent several periods split up into the two teams that will face off in Saturday’s spring game, and the units went head-to-head in an overtime drill to cap practice. Dakota Prukop and “Team Mighty Oregon” had the ball first. He moved the ball with a couple completions to Charles Nelson and a couple Royce Freeman runs, setting up a short touchdown pass to Dillon Mitchell. Travis Jonsen and “Team Webfoots” answered quickly with a scoring drive that took three plays: a nine-yard run by Tony Brooks-James, a reception by Johnny Mundt and finally a touchdown for Darren Carrington.

Matt Lubick talked with the media following practice yesterday.

■ Jarrid Denney talks about the two teams playing in the spring game and how they were selected.

■ Nick Jones calls this spring game one of the most intriguing in years.

The baseball team has added two games against Gonzaga for this year after having two games cancelled earlier due to weather and they took down the Civil War matchup yesterday 7-6 at PK Park.

Rob Moseley has your Friday spring practice report.

The offense really got rolling in the second 7-on-7. Prukop had touchdowns to Carrington, Nelson and Kirk Merritt, Terry Wilson dumped off a short pass that Mundt collected before fighting off multiple defenders for a touchdown, and on the last play Jonsen connected with Taylor Alie for a score.

Brady Hoke and Travis Jonsen talked with the media after practice yesterday.

■ This becoming too familiar IMO, another baseball loss, 4-2 to UCLA, and another softball win, 10-4 vs ASU. Needs to step it up guys.

■ Chantel Jennings looks at the top ten players on Oregon's depth chart.

1. RB Royce Freeman: No surprise to see the Ducks’ workhorse at the top of this list. Last season, just 12 percent of Freeman’s carries were held to no gain -- the lowest percentage of any top-10 back in the nation in 2015. With another new quarterback the Ducks will continue to rely on the steady machine that is Freeman, and he’s only going to get better and stronger.

■ Tyson Alger talked with OL Mike Miller recently on his transition from Boise to the Ducks.

■ Oregon lost at UCLA yesterday 6-3.

On deck: The Ducks and Bruins will play game two of their series Friday night at 7 p.m. Junior left-hander Cole Irvin (3-3, 4.01) will take the mound for the Ducks, while junior righty Grant Dyer (1-2, 6.50) will be on the mound for the Ducks.

Chantel Jennings and Ryan Thorburn talk about the running back depth chart.

■ John Canzano had Tyson Alger on his radio show recently to talk about Oregon football and basketball.

Rob Moseley has your Wednesday spring practice report.

Oregon’s offense won Wednesday’s scored “competition day” periods, 76-70, reversing a week of defeats to the defense that included the first competition day of the spring last week, and then Friday’s scrimmage.

And while no single player deserves the credit – Dakota Prukop had his best practice of the month, Charles Nelson was at the other end of many of Prukop’s passes, and Royce Freeman was running like a freight train – junior left tackle Tyrell Crosby definitely set the tone.

Matt Lubick and Pharoah Brown talked with the media after practice yesterday.

Tyson Alger looks at the running back crew where Royce Freeman is clearly at the top of the depth chart.

In a spring featuring the installation of a new defensive scheme, a renovation of the offensive line and a quarterback battle, Freeman has single-handedly made Oregon's running back position the most stable on the team.

Rob Moseley has your Friday spring practice report and Brady Hoke talks to the media after practice.

“I think we did a good job with our intensity,” said junior end Henry Mondeaux, probably the Ducks’ most consistent, formidable presence defensively now that DeForest Buckner has graduated. “The offense made a couple mistakes that we capitalized on. We were playing fast. We still obviously have a ton to work on, and we were making mistakes too, but I like the overall effort.”

Tyson Alger says Travis Jonsen wants to put an end to Oregon Ducks' need for transfer quarterbacks.

His primary responsibilities will be on offense. Oregon's coaches have the prerogative to move him around — it's only April — but right now, Lubick is excited to see what a year of focusing on offense will do for him and the others on the field.

Rob Moseley has your Wednesday spring practice report.

If there’s one word more than any other being used to describe the defense under new coordinator Brady Hoke this spring, it’s “aggressive.” They backed it up in the second-and-long drill, repeatedly harassing the offense into sacks and incompletions. Inside linebackers Danny Mattingly and Johnny Ragin III both got into the backfield on one rep to force a Travis Jonsen incompletion, and on the next rep T.J. Daniel sacked Dakota Prukop.

■ Ted Miller wonders who gets the most or least from its recruits and Oregon comes out in great shape.

Highlights: The pads were on for the first time, and as usual the intensity ratcheted up a notch. During the first team period, Evan Baylis was wrapped up by a defender, then had another come in and pop the ball loose just at – or after – the whistle. That got everybody’s blood flowing...

■ The losses continue to mount for the baseball team as they lost to Michigan St. 3-2 in the 10th inning.

On deck: The Ducks continue their four-game road trip on Saturday when they meet Michigan State in game two of the three-game series. Matt Krook (1-1, 4.39) will pitch for Oregon, while Michigan State sends Ethan Landon (2-1, 2.12) to the mound.

Rob Moseley says the success of the basketball team this year fuels the fire as the team heads to next season.

The pieces could be in place for a similar run, should the roster return intact. Brooks and Dorsey are both talented scorers, and Boucher will have a year of development after being granted another season of eligibility by the NCAA.

■ John Canzano likes the idea of Dwayne Benjamin (basketball team) trying his hand on the football team.

Anything Oregon can do to help create a mismatch, it should do.

■ Oregon baseball lost to Notre Dame 6-3 yesterday.

On deck: The Ducks continue their four-game road trip today when they visit Michigan State to open a three-game series. Cole Irvin (2-2, 2.66) will pitch for Oregon, while Michigan State sends Cam Vieaux (4-1, 1.46) to the mound.
