Duck Stuff: Morning Mud

Morning Mud
■ John Schroeder takes a closer look at former Oregon running back and baseball player Don Reynolds. Part one of a two-part series focuses on his football play at Oregon. Here is a sample:

One of the only highlights of the ’72 football season came on November 18th, during that year’s Civil War in Corvallis.  In [Dan] Fouts’ last game at Oregon, the 4-7 Ducks walloped the Beavers 30-3.  Reynolds ensured that the contest was over from the beginning, scampering for a 60-yard touchdown on the game’s first play from scrimmage. In the waning moments the insouciant Fouts fired up a celebratory cigar on the sideline while Norval Turner completed the game.

■ The Ducks dropped the series finale 12-2 to the beav trash yesterday but can clinch the season series with a win in Corvallis on Tuesday.

■ J.J. Altobelli has been named to the latest watch list for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award. The Ducks’ senior is one of 14 players on the list.

The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas.
