Moon Halo

We are lucky to live in Eugene. Last night around 7:40pm if you looked straight up you caught a glimpse of the moon with a full 360 degree halo around it. While this phenomenon isn't that unusual there was also a contrail left by a jet that almost perfectly disected it.

I didn't take this picture as my camera didn't have a wide enough lens to capture the image. The halo is created when high thin clouds where ice crystals form - millions of them, all with the same shape: an elongated hexagon. As the light of the Moon passes through these crystals it is refracted by 22°, hence the size of the halo.
